Years ago the thought of a pushbutton lock seemed like something you would only see on The Jetsons or some SciFi movie but like everything else that once seemed only a dream pushbutton lock convenience is now a reality and more and more people are installing them on their home’s doors.

.

Push Button Lock Convenience

The main reason people install push button door locks is for convenience. Instead of having to use a key one only has to push a few buttons and the door unlocks with no more fumbling for keys and with many pushbutton lock models using backlit keypads there is no more searching for the keyhole in the dark!

Pushbutton Lock Options

There are several types of push button lock brands to choose from and they vary in terms of quality and price so you need to decide exactly what type of lock you are looking for and how much you are willing to spend on it.

The basic pushbutton lock uses no batteries and is restricted to just one access code which means if you give your code to someone like a repair person you will have to change the code and notify everyone that should have access what the new code is. This usually entails taking the lock apart and can mean calling a locksmith for complicated locks.

These locks are 100% mechanical meaning you have to physically push the buttons and turn a knob or lever once the code is entered before you can open the door.

Since they have no electronic parts they may last longer in salt water area like beach houses but the overall hassle of changing the access codes might make this type of lock less desirable for the front door of a house.

The other option is to get an electronic pushbutton lock that is normally battery powered and allows for multiple entry codes that are easily changed with most higher-end locks letting you assign temporary access codes as needed.

Since these locks are electronic once the code has been entered correctly the deadbolt retracts automatically. This is a nice feature for anyone that that has trouble opening doors like the elderly or someone with a disability.

Most of these powered locks have contact points where you can place a 9 volt battery for temporary power in case the lock’s batteries fail similar to many home safes on the market today that have an electronic keypad.

.

A Push Button Deadbolt Is Best

When picking out your lock look for a deadbolt lock because it resists forced entry better than a spring-bolt lock and make sure it is has a Grade 1 or Grade 2 rating for the best protection.

Depending on your home insurer you might even qualify for a rate reduction if they give discounts for higher quality locks on your home.

Pushbutton Lock Considerations

Now that you know about push button locks and what they offer in terms of convenience it’s time to look at some things that many people fail to consider when buying these locks.

The first thing you should know is many of today’s push button door locks have a key as a backup entry method in case the pushbutton mechanism fails.

Having a key means having a keyhole and this means the lock is susceptible to lock picking, vandalism and lock bumping which is a way of opening a lock that is so simple kids are getting on the internet and learning how to do it.

If you are going to spend the money and get a new lock try and find one that does not have a keyhole because if security is important (in addition to the convenience factor) you might as well not have any locks on your doors if you get one that can be “bumped”.

Some electronic locks can be defeated by giving them a high voltage shock so compare models carefully and choose one that has circuit protection built-in. Here is my overall favorite electronic deadbolt that pretty much has it all – Sunnect AP501SN Lock

No matter what type of lock you get also make sure it is resistant to brute force entry methods like hammering and drilling. The tougher the lock is the longer it takes to defeat and burglars will not spend much time trying to break a lock because of the dangers of being caught.

One of my favorite places to buy things is Amazon.com because they have low prices, free shipping on many products and have a hassle free ordering and return policy.

I do almost all of my on-line shopping there and will even pay a little more for a product because of the trust they have earned from me over the years. I know that when I order something I’m going to get it without any problems unlike ordering from Billy Bob’s Locks Store that might go out of business after my credit card is charged.
